We would like to hear from you regarding the Engine 1095 and it's Restoration Project .

Have you seen the Engine?  Do you know it's history?  Do you feel it's an important part of the Kingston attractions?  Can the city do more to speed things up?   Any advice you would like to offer?

Glad to see this D10 getting some work. The most important things you can do for this engine cost very little and will not be seen by the public.

Most critical, DO NOT try to move it without first polishing and greasing the axle journals. This is a very dirty and difficult job, but essential to avoid ruining the bearings. There have been at least a dozen locomotives that have had their bearings ruined in recent years when well-meaning but unknowing volunteers started a "let's move the old train" project without first performing this essential task.

Nearly as bad a job is the cleaning of ashes and rust from the smokebox, firebox, ashpan, tender coal pocket and tender tank. Also, the smokestack should be covered immediately, as it should have been 50 years ago.

I'm a retired railroader (CPR no less, from the Delaware & Hudson), who restored a similar 4-6-0 at Shelburne, VT and will be happy to provide free advice. Feel free to contact me at bobyar2001@yahoo.com

Good luck with this project.

I have to wonder about the "spirit" of City officials if they can't help to restore the "Spirit of Sir John". With a proposed festival in honour of our first prime minister to be held in Kingston in July 2010, one might think that the City would be getting behind (or in front) of the restoration project!
Good luck with the project!

I really like the plans you have. I've been to see the engine many times while I lived in Kingston and was amazed at how many other people were there just looking and taking pictures.

Hopefully a little more progress can be made on behalf of the city regarding getting things into action as we already know there are volunteers eager to start work. A nice flood of emails to them may help ;-)

Good luck with it and get some pictures up on the gallery page when you get a chance.
